The team had helicopter training with Rescue 948 today, after which the crew dropped us off on Seana Mheallan for abseiling practice.

On Sunday, 23rd March 2025, the world of Mountain Rescue and Mountaineering lost one of its greatest friends and mentors. David ‘Heavy’ Whalley passed away after a heroic battle with illness, fighting until the end like the warrior he was on our beloved mountains.Many owe Heavy their gratitude—he was always there with advice and support. His knowledge of MRT was unmatched. While he loved all the teams in Scotland, he had a soft spot for Torridon. After retiring from the RAF, he joined us at Torridon MRT. He had a great sense of humor but was utterly serious when it mattered. He thrived in challenging situations.Heavy was a close friend of my father, Eoghain Maclean. They met in the ’70s when my father was with the Braemar team, and their bond strengthened when he joined Torridon MRT, often working alongside the RAF team. I first met Heavy at 16 when I joined Torridon MRT. He was not only my father’s friend but became mine as well.The epics we shared in the hills will stay with me forever. He was a fountain of wisdom, always offering support and guidance. Whether in the mountains or at events, he was the heart and soul of every gathering. You could hear his booming laugh from the next corrie.I’ll never forget the look he’d give me when I misbehaved—soon followed by finger-pointing, then laughter. I could never keep a straight face, and neither could he. He often joked that the spelling of "buffoon" was simply "Ryan."Heavy’s support and advice—whether for MRT or high-altitude mountaineering—were invaluable. The memories we made in the hills will always be special. Now, he has joined the legends of Scottish MRT and mountaineering on the great mountain above.I will be forever grateful. The team's base was very full last week for our March training session, with a strong turnout on a grey Spring day! This didn't dampen enthusiasm however, with stretcher rigging and casualty packaging workshops leading into a full multi casualty scenario. Torridon Mountain Rescue Team is in Telemark, Norway.

Somehow it's been a week since the team returned home from winter training in Rjukan, Norway! Despite some relatively lean conditions, we got a huge amount of value from the trip - from climbing mileage on classic routes, developing technical winter skills and even some rest day (and evening!) skiing.
